Yesterday, I unburied myself from another should storm. Today, I stood back up to see the undercurrent of what pulled me down again. First step was twinge when I saw an unrelated email with the same word as a writing title which helped me spot a front and center typo - the title was “Judgement or Witnessing” and is now Judge or Witness. I changed it, did not dwell and moved onto the second step of what was in my awareness (another uncomfortable feeling that paused me). It was a recommended video of an X Games and Olympic athlete whom I met 9 months ago on a #japow ski trip. Since it arrived with hesitation, I thought to ‘watch later’ but did not. Hesitation was a reminder about a group who were filming a movie and I wondered why they didn’t share it. After changing my judge hat to a witness cap; I could see two sides of the story - one side was the me who also hid a movie (judge) and the other side was the one who saw the group as fellow freedom chasers (witness). The third step is me, right here and right now, writing about these feelings as a new approach to freedom, thanks to standing back up with whatever grabbed me as clues from my inbox and intuition.
I actively bypassed (decided to see how it feels tomorrow) the fleeting thoughts of what clever comment to write or how to reconnect or follow up as it was clear not to involve others in my confusion (should storm), so I could trampoline forward. Taking the higher road by not wasting others energy or time with my mystery or pondering feels good and feels like freedom. Once the truth of the matter is seen, all the other stuff quickly dissolves away instead of distracting or pulling you down. When you can clear the blocks, writing is like a free flowing cascade where you can see clearly what is going on and which photo captured that last time freedom was trying to catch your attention.
All that above part is the necessary and uncomfortable process of getting to the heart of the matter (truth) without skating or running away from now on.
When you reach clarity; freedom from the confusion is found without need for a chase or chaser.
Here are three main freedom roads based on what most people think or hear, not from experience otherwise they wouldn’t still be chasing an illusion of freedom:
When they have more time or money; they’ll be free.
When they have more space or own place; they’ll be free.
If they could run away from responsibility; they’ll be free.
Freedom becomes an endless chase when the aim is people, places or possessions;
because freedom is a feeling and cannot be bought, contained or owned by anyone; yet it can be enjoyed by everyone.
Freedom can be found instantly by changing your perspective or by listening to new perspectives to old problems.
We don’t need retreats, liquids, plants, gurus, rules, secrets, videos or vacations from life. We need less external distractions and more internal satisfactions with life as our trusted teacher.
We need to stop running, stop chasing and stop seeking freedom on the outside. You see, always getting outside opinions eventually exhausts you as it keeps pointing you to find ALL your answer inside.
We need life and life needs us to participate wherever we choose to stand today, not yesterday or tomorrow, but today!
We need people, places and perspectives to feel alive (freedom of being a simple, yet complex, human being; not a human doing.)
When we can change our relationship to responsibility as a meaning and not a something it should look like; we can set ourselves free.
Responsibility is the ability to respond.
